Dr. Zipporah Okoth is not only a Lecturer in Theatre Studies but also a performer of the same craft that she prepares students to master in Kenyan universities. If you are an astute theatre enthusiast and a fan of Zippy’s then you must have watched all her previous one-handers, which have always been fired up and sultry.
Dr. Zippy’s past shows include Stranger in my Bed, Strange Voices, Agatha a Hopeless Romantic, and the most recent stand-up storytelling piece, Side Chic Wife.
One thing that is consistent across all the one-handers performed by Zippy is that she has always been unafraid to strip her inner secrets bare before her live audience. In a way, Zippy has managed to amass a following for her solo pieces, with a fanbase that is always ready to render all her shows SOLD OUT immediately after she releases the official details about these shows.
Unlike the previous shows where the central themes have been Dr. Zippys attempt to tackle her love life, dating, marriage, and parenting experiences, Mama’s Mirror brings a new taste to the audience. In Zippy’s own words, the one-woman stand-up storytelling piece takes a deep dive into the lives of African mothers and daughters, and the complex relationships that exist in the mother-daughter relationships in the continent, specifically in Kenya.
The show takes the audience on Dr. Zippy's relationship with her mother from childhood, youth, and motherhood. Zippy tells of the experiences of her mother growing up in Nairobi, getting married, and emigrating to the small town of Homa Bay to start a family. Zippy adds a flare to this narrative with her reflections on living her childhood in the village and then moving to the capital city at the peak of her youth as well as the re-awakening of the life and bustles her mother told her about the City and men.
MAMA’S MIRROR will be showing only once, on Friday, March 31st. The gates into the show will open at 6:30 pm. The show starts at 7pm and until 9pm. You have to keep time to get the best sitting position.
